Residents of the parish and representatives of the Apuldram Centre, have been very successful in engaging with West Sussex County Council to implement the speed reduction from the national speed limit to 30mph on Apuldram Lane South and Dell Quay Road.  To support this work it is felt that it is important to purchase a SID, this will act as a visual deterrent by displaying real-time vehicle speeds, encouraging drivers to adhere to the posted speed limits. Studies have shown that such devices effectively promote safer driving behaviour by raising awareness and prompting drivers to slow down when necessary.

By reducing speeding incidents, the project will contribute to a safer and more pleasant environment for residents and road users. Additionally, data collected from the device can be used to assess traffic patterns and support future traffic management initiatives.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to foster a culture of responsible driving, reduce accidents, and enhance road safety for everyone in the community.

The full cost of the SID and associated equipment would total £5,613.60, which we believe represents value for money.  The Clerk is currently investigating grant funding to enable the purchase of the SID.

The County Council has approved five locations for the use of a SID, 2 on Dell Quay Road, 1  on Apuldram Lane South and 2 on the Birdham Road.

At the Annual Parish Meeting on 22nd May 2025 a resident questioned the effectiveness of SIDs and expressed the view that it was unnecessary to purchase a SID, it was highlighted at the meeting that there had been extensive research into the effectiveness and this information would be made available.
